Making The Man

Moses is dead. There are millions of men women and children who need leadership. Who is the man that steps up to lead the nation? Joshua, who’s very name means “the Lord is salvation” is the man that God has chosen to lead His people. Why him? Why this man Joshua and not any one of many capable younger men? Joshua is over 80 years old. There are many ways to train men to be leaders, Joshua was trained for the work, not by any formal education as we know it, but in the field, on the job, so to speak. Here are the lessons:

The man of God must be available.

The man of God must be obedient.

So Moses said to  Joshua, “Choose men for us and go out, fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will station myself on the top of the hill with  the staff of God in my hand.” Joshua did as Moses  told him,  and fought against Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and  Hur went up to the top of the hill. -Ex 17:9-10 (NASB)

The man of God must be fruitful.

So Joshua  overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. -Ex 17:13 (NASB)

Men can be available, and they can be obedient, Joshua was successful in what he was asked to do.

The man of God must be a disciple.

Then  Joshua the son of Nun, the attendant of Moses from his youth, said, ” Moses, my lord, restrain them.” 29 But Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? -Num 11:28-29 (NASB)

Joshua followed Moses for a long time. He was faithful to Moses as to the Lord.

The man of God must be a worshipper.

Now Moses used to take  the tent and pitch it outside the camp, a good distance from the camp, and he called it the tent of meeting. And  everyone who sought the Lord would go out to the tent of meeting which was outside the camp. 8 And it came about, whenever Moses went out to the tent, that all the people would arise and stand, each at the entrance of his tent, and gaze after Moses until he entered the tent. 9 Whenever Moses entered the tent,  the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent;  and  the Lord would speak with Moses. 10 When all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would arise and worship, each at the entrance of his tent. 11 Thus  the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, just as a man speaks to his friend. When  Moses returned to the camp,  his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent. – Ex 33:7-11 (NASB)

Joshua followed Moses’ example, but he wasn’t just a follower, Moses’ faith was his own.

The man of God must be concerned about the people.

The man of God must be faithful with the message.

…and they spoke to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, saying, ” The land which we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land. 8  If the Lord is pleased with us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us— a land which flows with milk and honey. 9 Only  do not rebel against the Lord; and do not  fear the people of the land, for they will be our  prey. Their  protection has been removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them.” 10  But all the congregation said to stone them with stones. Then  the glory of the Lord appeared in the tent of meeting to all the sons of Israel. – Num 14:7-10 (NASB)

Joshua was zealous for God’s people, he gave them a strong rebuke, and gave them his example of faith.

The man of God must be called.

Then Moses spoke to the Lord, saying, 16 “May the Lord, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation, 17 who  will go out  and come in before them, and who will lead them out and  bring them in, so that the congregation of the Lord will not be  like sheep which have no shepherd.” 18 So the Lord said to Moses, ” Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and  lay your hand on him; 19 and have him stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation, and  commission him in their sight. 20 You shall put some of your  authority on him, in order that all the congregation of the sons of Israel may obey him.

Num 27:15-20 (NASB)

Joshua was chosen of God, validated by men, and commissioned by the priest to lead with authority.

The man of God must have the power of God.

Now Joshua the son of Nun was  filled with the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; and the sons of Israel listened to him and did as the Lord had commanded Moses. – Deut 34:9 (NASB)

How could any man lead the children of God without the wisdom and strength of the Spirit of God?
