“For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep.” –1 Corinthians 11:30
Paul gives us this teaching as he is instructing the church in Corinth to get their eyes off of themselves and onto Jesus. It’s a curious thing, that self-focus can cause us to be weak, sick, or even cause our death. I have found this to be absolutely true in my life.
When I am most concerned about myself and my needs, I am the worst human being to be around. When I am humbly mindful of my life in view of the Savior, I am at least tolerable as a human being.
I wonder how many present day maladies are simply the result of too much self-focus?
If we look at James 4:1-6, we see the same thing. James asks, “what is the source of quarrels and conflicts?” Then, in the following verses we have the answer,… you and your selfish desires.
These six verses contain the key to the victorious christian life.
As long as self is the focus, pride will rule, and God is opposed to us.
When self is identified with Christ, then we have humility and subsequent grace.
“I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. Galatians 2:20
“A man must examine himself…” 1 Corinthians 11:28
