You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows. –Psalm 23:5
The picture here is the Lord providing for those that are His even in the face of their enemies. Even while surrounded by trial, difficulty, hostility, and even death itself the Lord brings comfort and provision.
The last enemy that will be abolished is death 1 Cor.15:26.
David was God’s choice for king, he was anointed and would be king. While his enemy Saul was in power, the kingdom was only David’s by faith, it was yet to be, even though it was a present reality in God’s eyes.
Our anointing is much the same, it’s not always visible in this fallen world, yet it is a reality all the same –by faith. The anointing, the cup of blessing, -both belong to the believer, declared by God, received by faith.
“For this reason it is by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all” –Romans 4:16
