This Land Is Your Land.

Like a lot of conservatives, this week’s election has left me kind of scratching my head.
There are so many issues that divide our nation, and many of them were voted on Tuesday.
I’d like to lay out what the American populace chose, the way I see it.
It’s therapy for me, you will either find it interesting or infuriating.

1. America chose to maintain the right to kill her babies. The Democratic party did a good job demonizing Mitt Romney in swing states, instilling fear that he would take away a woman’s right to choose. (to kill her baby) Of course it’s not true, at this point that is in the hands of the Supreme Court, and it’s unlikely to change.
At any rate, it worked, this is a very important voting issue for most folks, on either side.

Personally, I would like to see abortion go away. It’s murder of the most vulnerable and innocent. For convenience, we look the other way, and what we allow, trying to cover our eyes and ears, we would not allow to happen to a frog. Imagine if I made a video in which I ripped off the limbs of a live frog. I could do it in a clinical setting, then discard the remains in a dumpster. What if I posted it on youtube? Can you imagine the outrage from the animal rights activists? It would make that anti-Muslim video that gave us the tragedy of Benghazi (wink, wink) look like a legit documentary!

As a nation, we chose to embrace a postion that is entirely against “nature and nature’s God.” There is nothing more engrained in human DNA, especially the makeup of a woman, than to nurture and care for a baby. It’s something wired into them. When a mother, and complicit father, violate that natural programming, the emotional and mental trauma is certain. Violating the conscience is a seriously damaging thing. This is why those who have chosen this path live with guilt and regret for the rest of their lives. What they have tried to do with that guilt, is just legalize it away. The problem is the DNA. Though they deny the legitimacy of the unborn child, the facts remain … living human beings are slaughtered in the name of convenience, and we know it.

2. America, or at least the great state of King County, WA chose to modify the definition of marriage, and further embrace homosexuality as normal and healthy.
Now, it doesn’t matter what opponents of gay marriage say, they have been labeled as haters. I know there are some fringe groups that do use hate speech, name calling, etc. It’s unfortunate everyone gets lumped together, as there are many opponents of gay marriage that I find I have very little in common with. They say we want to infringe on others rights to live how they want and practice whatever sexual expression they desire. But the referendum that just passed, didn’t really have anything to do with rights, it had to do with definition. What the homosexual community wanted, and got, was a redefinition of marriage that included them.
Isn’t it interesting, this is exactly what the pro-choice crowd wants –legitimacy.
So now, after thousands of years, marriage will be defined as “any ol’ couple at all.”
I don’t hate homosexuals. I don’t approve of their practice, but I don’t hate them any more than I hate drug addicts. Here is why I think it’s wrong…

The most obvious thing to the critical mind, is that the plumbing just does not work. That thing, was not designed to go there… period! Yes, I said designed, as in Designer. God designed you and your body to function a certain way. Sex and procreation are included. Yes there are many ways to have physical sexual pleasure, but clearly the designer intended one way in particular. It doesn’t take an engineer to figure this out.
So, you might say, “well, I don’t believe in a designer.” That’s fine, but you realize you cannot then run to evolution don’t you? If you believe that homosexuality is normal and healthy… that logic doesn’t work so well.
Remember, much of what evolutionists believe is based on Darwin’s “survival of the fittest.” Are you following me? Homosexuality simply doesn’t work in an evolutionary model. If you take a dozen homosexuals and put them on a desert island and leave them for a generation … they disappear.

The problem is spelled out very clearly in the scriptures. The Apostle Paul gave us a very clear understanding of the practice of homosexuality in Romans chapter one. Here is what he has to say: ”

“women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error” –Rom. 26 (partial) & 27 (emphasis mine)

So, biblically as well as naturally, what America is choosing to embrace and advance, in both cases, is unnatural and violates God’s design. How do you think that is going to work out? What if I decided to exchange my motor oil for antifreeze, putting the oil in my engine, and antifreeze in my radiator? The car might work for a short while, but eventually it would seize up. It would be ruined.

3. America has decided it’s good to get high.
Again, not every state got to vote on legalizing marijuana, but we did. We are embracing it wholeheartedly.
I know christians who voted for it based on economic reasons. That’s great thinking, “get out of the fiscal crisis by mortgaging the future health of our kids” -brilliant! I have lots of experience with pot. I started with alcohol, but marijuana is the gateway drug, and it opened the door to many others, and it ruined a good portion of my young life. As a pastor and counselor, I’ve seen it over and over for years and tears. Literally.
Marijuana is really no different in my mind than alcohol as far as inebriation is concerned, and soon it will be available legally. What’s the difference between Johnny smoking a little bud, and his old man who has a couple of glasses of wine? Nada.
The scripture says, “don’t be drunk with wine, but be filled with the Spirit.” –Eph. 5:18
The problem isn’t “getting high” it’s getting addicted. Welcome to the future America. Here’s a tip: when Shick Shadel goes public, buy stock, -it’s a winner.

So here is what we are doing. We are embracing unnatural and God forbidden behavior, legitimizing it, and calling it good. Well, that is easier to do when you are stoned.

This land is your land, but increasingly, and eventually, it’s not mine.

I welcome reasonable argument or discussion on these things.

  1. I have a few questions you make great points. I don’t find any fault in Your reasoning. People are going to smoke. People are going to be gay regardless, Did you know that alot of gays are born with (hormone problems) So if you were to follow the bible then, you wouldn’t take any medicines god created us perfectly in his image? Science only goes so far and then comes god.. You don’t want abortion. And we definately don’t want a million more mouths to feed… So the best course of action would be not to procreate at all. So I wonder how we are going to do that peacefully in one day

  2. You are right, people are going to smoke dope anyway. People will still steal and kill too, that doesn’t justify calling it “right.”

If we follow the idea of being “born that way”… well I was born, in a natural sense, wanting to have sex with pretty much every woman I see. But, I am not an animal. I am able to control myself, and do what’s right. The “born that way argument” will work for child molesters.

As far as medical marijuana, I think that it is useful for that, and in some cases better than narcotics.

  3. Thank you Pastor Jim for this post. We needed to see these issues in the Light of scripture.
This election cycle was a tough one to take. PS: I thought i read somewhere that 3 million
republicans did not vote this time. If so, that was 3 million votes for Obama and these issues
    you wrote about.

  4. I agree with you on 2.5 of 3. Pot can be a gateway drug or used responsibly can be both medically and mentally relaxing. God created it and it’s the only “drug” that can be used without any manufacturing or processing. Anything can become addicting be it a Dick’s Deluxe or a Starbucks. Responsibility and moderation are the keys. If the government had been responsible about weed long ago and regulated it, you may not have gone thru the experiences you did. Legalization and regulation of marijuana is long over due. Prosecuting adults for smoking a bowl is ridiculous. It’s so much safer than drinking. The war is over.

  5. Well said Jim…I approve this message.. Thank you for your out spokenness (not a word) and being bold, because that is what is going to change things. As Christians we need to do more. I seriously thought Obama would not get re-elected.. I was disappointed in my America. I told my daughter that Gay marriage is now legal in Washington.. She was sad. We are not against Homosexuals, but why the heck! Do we get rights for our ” sexual” preference? It’s so dumb. Anyway, my heart aches for our country. I know the Lord is in control, but we still need to ” wake up”, take a stand for what is right.

    Abortion; Murder
    Gay Marriage: Immoral
    Pot: Sheesh!

  6. Mike, I’ve been thinking about your declaration that “the war is over” – that is something only a spectator has the freedom to declare. The battle is raging.

  7. 1. America chose the right to kill her babies? Do you realize how crazy that sounds? America has chosen the right to allow women to decide what to do with their own bodies. I just love how you used the topic of abortion to talk about Mitt Romney, the murder of the “most vulnerable and innocent” (aka embryos) and fucking Benghazi. Way to stay pointed.

Have you taken basic anatomy? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOJyhk4QZvc

    2. The great state of King County, WA? I wasn’t aware King County was a state.

“It’s unfortunate everyone gets lumped together, as there are many opponents of gay marriage that I find I have very little in common with. They say we want to infringe on others rights to live how they want and practice whatever sexual expression they desire. But the referendum that just passed, didn’t really have anything to do with rights, it had to do with definition. What the homosexual community wanted, and got, was a redefinition of marriage that included them.”

What the LGBT community wants is to be treated like every other person around them and yes, to also be included. You’re entitled to disagree, but that doesn’t mean that you get to say they can’t have what you have because you don’t agree. What’s so wrong with a referendum that includes “them”? Are they not people, entitled to the same things you love and cherish as a straight man or woman?

The plumbing doesn’t work, blah blah blah blah. We’ve all heard that thin argument. Also, why would we put a dozen homosexuals on a desert island and leave them for a generation? They disappear because no one can survive on a fucking desert island for “a generation”.

“What if I decided to exchange my motor oil for antifreeze, putting the oil in my engine, and antifreeze in my radiator? The car might work for a short while, but eventually it would seize up. It would be ruined.” Why would you do that? This makes absolutely no sense and has nothing to do with the subject.

    3. America has decided it’s good to get high because it is good to get high. Here’s the key; If you don’t like it, don’t use it. That goes for alcohol or any other substance. The whole gateway drug argument is so tired and ridiculous. Marijuana is no more addictive than alcohol and I don’t see anyone in the American trying to ban booze. Cigarettes are absolutely toxic, addictive and generally awful but I don’t see you taking to the streets over the banning of them. Like all substances, they can be abused.

I just love how you refer to yourself as a “counselor” without having any credentials, degrees or certifications. What makes you think you’re able to effectively counsel someone?

“We are embracing unnatural and God forbidden behavior, legitimizing it, and calling it good.”

If your god is the creator of everything, then I would have to assume he created marijuana. How is the use of this completely natural plant, unnatural? And if god provided this plant, what a dick he is for forbidding us to enjoy it. There are many uses for this wonderful plant beyond just, like, getting stoned man. It’s helping a lot of people and just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean that it’s any less useful. Stop using your religious agenda to back every argument. It’s pathetic.
